For Sue Hood’s subject of Discourse Analysis in anticipation of trying to meet the 6th June deadline for the EMT1 Assignment 2, part2 submission had been requested a further week’s extension, but I still came unstuck with the requirement that for ‘political reasons’ I had been required to set two external examinations outside of my curriculum teaching area but within my subject scope before the end of the week. I received the extension as requested from Anne BB but the point that I reflect upon here is that outside of face-to-face teaching all other learning is asynchronous by type (excepting the phone hook-up situation with the group assignment). I have reflected on this point in the last assignment as this is where skype and other technologies used where distance in learning is a physical barrier in turning asynchronous learning into directed synchronous activities.

The matter raised by Seely Brown concerning ‘bricolage’ at the Week 2 posting; as a descriptor of how we learn I still have concern about because whilst there is a large requirement in education today to be able to ‘navigate’ and seek out information at some stage subject expertise has to be learned and I am failing to see that ‘bricolge’ will provide this answer in education. There is a generational gap currently lost in the teaching of Science stranded courses and as a community we are in a world of hurt through this occurrence. With the Gen-Ys wanting to capture answers with minimum effort expended, the hard sciences that underpins all of society, in my opinion, is not being addressed in the e-learning solution.

Upon reflection, the meeting of the 19th May was thorough and complete. The name for the group was finalised, The Coach’s Assistant. The work allocation shortfalls became known and the establishing of communication times between us was sorted. There was shared responsibility and expectation struck between us in completing the Group Charter and how the work was to be edited. From my perspective in having to find a group to work with; the initial e-mail to the EMT2 students was probably reflective of many others having to work in group:- students hate it because their time is no longer entirely their own; it is a shared resource. From my own perspective I recognise it is how the world operates. A team approach to problem solving is the expected norm in business practice. The incompatibility arising in learning by coursework such as this subject’s content is that it is an additional requirement and not integrated within the subject’s program unlike day-to-day business activities. That said, in having dealt with this issue throughout my life the success within the group functioning is using the group meeting time as a confirmation stage, short in duration and highly focused with the end point being a reallocation of unfinished tasks and individuals going away to prepare that work for the next meeting iteration. This is how the meeting on the 19th May concluded and to gain synchronous learning/work continuities the e-mail and telephone communication method was used to align the group.

On the 24th May, (the scheduled block meeting period for the subject), the group met at 0800h to finalise the detail for presentation for Assignment 2, part1. At class presentation, whilst the group did not have the depth in detail of the other larger groups who presented, there was good understanding of the entire spectrum of the subject matter by all and more importantly the approach that was being presented was using the technology platforms to access information sources between people that had not previously been able to be tapped. Clearly the need was firmly positioned and the work we were presenting was the underpinning structure to allow the need to develop.

After considerable months of complaint over the TAFE computer I was using it was finally replaced this week. The continuity that was lost for me through equipment inaccessibility, the ‘big-brother’ approach has made me realise that equipment compatibility is paramount for e-learning to be truly viable. At all times a trainee needs to be able to step-out of synchronous learning to be able to find answers at least semi-synchronously to enable them to maintain their focus in their learning.

The topic, structure and work allocation was well considered and agreed that day and the first scheduled meeting was the immediate following Monday evening (19th May). We had between us the collective resources to make the project work and a time schedule to meet by the 19th May where we had to contribute and be accountable to one-another.

Both granted. Read Wenger’s paper and found the detail of Community of Practice sound but recognise that learning will take place only if the parties want to learn. It implies that the success in online learning is being able to learn asynchronously if there is sufficient structure to guide and support the learner. If there is too much structure the actual learning will be forfeited in response to dealing with the systemic responses. This is the point when learners will give up on the process. The note of significance is that the majority of on-line learning happens asynchronously! Ensure that the system is supportive to the learner.

My attraction to the site is the participation rate. Irrespective of the nature of the learning, I am of the opinion that unless a site is having strong ‘traffic’, then there is no ‘real learning’ happening. I settled on the Concrete Counter-top Forum, as the selected site for the Assignment 1, part1 submission and study. Managed to submit the assignment on-line but have more work to do to on the blog.
